Blake Schofield 0:03 My name is Blake Schofield, founder and CEO of Connections Illuminated, mom to three, and former corporate executive who got tired of sacrificing my life for a comfortable paycheck. My mission is to change women’s perspectives about what is possible, empowering them with the tools to create greater impact at home and at work without sacrificing their health time family or income. This is The Bridge to Fulfillment. Ever feel stuck by life circumstances or when you need to make changes or big decisions, you aren’t sure on the best path or right decision to make. If so, you’re gonna love today’s episode of The Bridge to Fulfillment. Because honestly, that’s a place where I spent a lot of my time for the majority of my life. And here’s what I learned. We are not stuck because of our circumstances. But by how we are thinking and the actions we are either taking, or not taking. better decision making and better outcomes with more possibility for your life comes from a few things. Our need for control has us wasting far too much time trying to solve problems we either don’t yet need to solve, or that we need to get an impartial outside view on. So what’s the key to more effective decision making? Well, realizing a few things. Number one, we are limited by our perspective and experiences. We only know what we know. And there are infinitely more options and possibilities than you could likely conceive. Think about it. How many of you actually were able to predict the pandemic toilet paper shortage, the two weeks that turned into two years and we’re still talking about it much less the regular surprises and unexpected things that happen in your life. We don’t have a crystal ball and trying to pretend that we do is setting us up for failure. So number one, we’re limited by our perspectives and experiences, we have to realize there are infinitely more options and possibilities than we can conceive of. Number two, trying to make sure you have every detail pulled together before you take action creates stuckness and ensures you will end up with a lesser outcome than what’s truly possible for you. Because either you believe you have that crystal ball and you stay tethered, then to the plan that you create upfront. Or you actually risk lying to yourself by changing course. You tell yourself well, this is the only way. And then your face was wait, the way that I thought was going to work isn’t working. So either I hold on to that and I keep doing the thing I was doing. Or I have to admit that I was wrong. And I have to change course. And here’s what I know to be true. Remember the Virginia Satir quote, “Most people prefer the certainty of misery to the misery of uncertainty.” How many times have you held on or done something that you can see is not getting you where you need to go? Because you didn’t know what else lied and other options, right? You didn’t want to risk lying to yourself. So you stayed on a course that you knew wasn’t right. Another thing we do is we decide exactly what things have to look like. And in doing so we miss better alternatives, we cannot see the goal literally sitting right in front of our feet. Remember, based on your vantage point today, and what you can see, you don’t know everything. And so if you have set in stone, what that next thing needs to look like, you are absolutely going to give yourself a less optimal outcome than what you could have. Because you’re never allowing yourself opportunity for growth, new learnings or new possibilities. So often, we’ve been taught that to be responsible to be set up for success, we need to have a plan, we have to have every single thing mapped out we have to know exactly how it’s going to go. That’s certainly what I was taught. And I believed for so many years that that’s why I was successful. And I can tell you now from my vantage point, knowing what I know today and looking back and what I did, that I was successful in spite of that. And then in fact, I wasted so much time and energy. And I had less optimal outcome. Because I was so tethered to a plan that I believed was the only way because I spent so much time up front before I ever took action feeling like I had to have everything set in stone. So if that’s you, I want you to know that change is possible for you. Change is possible for you to have peace of mind and ease in your decision making.

Blake Schofield 4:40 To be able to surrender to the fact that you don’t have control anyway. And you don’t need to to be successful and to be able to truly shift how you make decisions to have more peace of mind more momentum, and ultimately more success. So what should you do instead? Number one, seek wise counsel for someone who has been there and done that someone has already achieved what you want to achieve. Super important to surround yourself by people who are further ahead than you. Because they have solutions and answers to things you don’t yet know. They have a visibility to things ahead that you don’t yet have. And they can help you get that and shortcut the learning number to surrender to the need to have everything figured out. Instead, focus on the next one to do things that need to go right. As you do that, you’ll gather more information, which will help you make the next set of decisions, so on and so forth. As long as you have clarity on your North star and you continue to make decisions that are aligned with it. This process will open up new opportunities and better paths than what you could have ever even possibly been able to plan or conceive of on your own and truly creating a life that is so far beyond what you ever thought was possible.
