How to Get Past Your Fears

Ep: 148

Fear is a natural part of life. However, our fears don’t always represent the truth.

Many times, they’re just beliefs that we allow to hold us back.

If your fears are based on misbeliefs that you’re telling yourself, then you are allowing them to drive your decisions, your thoughts, your time, and ultimately, your future.

Today, Blake reveals the true origins of our fears and explains how they are often based on lies we tell ourselves. If you’re ready to get past your fears and truly create the life you want, it starts with understanding that not everything your brain tells you is true.

Fear is simply your brain reacting to the uncertainty you feel.

But YOU hold the power to shift your fears and change your life.

Today, you’ll learn which of your fears might be holding you back, and how you can gain control over misbeliefs. You’ll hear the most important questions to ask yourself if you’re ready to move forward, and why making friends with the fears you carry is so important

Blake Schofield 0:03 My name is Blake Schofield, founder and CEO of Connections Illuminated, mom to three, and former corporate executive who got tired of sacrificing my life for a comfortable paycheck. My mission is to change women’s perspectives about what is possible, empowering them with the tools to create greater impact at home and at work without sacrificing their health time, family or income. This is The Bridge to Fulfillment. Fear is tied to feeling powerlessness, but you aren’t powerless. You have the ability every day to make decisions that can move you forward closer to what you want. Want some proof of that? Well think about it. Unexpected things have likely come your way in your life, things you hadn’t planned for. And somehow you figure it out, you adapted, you survived, and you are still here. I want you to imagine a time and how much easier life would be if you didn’t have to go at it alone. If the things that you are most fearful of had a proven path, you had support, or you had a process or a toolkit to know how to deal with it.

Blake Schofield 1:19 Today, we’re talking about fear, and how to get past the fear to truly create the life that you want. You know, people always act in accordance with what they believe to be true about themselves and their environment. So what misbeliefs or lies are you telling yourself that are holding you back from your dreams? What fears are you allowing to drive your decisions, your mind, your time, and ultimately, your future? You know, I used to tell myself that I couldn’t have at all that it wasn’t possible to have a career that supported my family. And also time to do the things I left. I bought into the lie that I had to keep putting in my time until I retired. But if I delegated enough, got enough support, that I’d be happy balancing my work and life. But those were lies, they were lies based off of the fear that I had, that it wasn’t possible. And those lies kept me trapped for years, trying to balance everything, when what I really needed was to face my fears, get clear on what really mattered to me, and build a plan that allowed me to follow my dreams. So if today you aren’t doing what you want, I want you to stop and really think about why. Because usually the lie comes right after you say, ‘I wish I could X, but…’ and then there’s the lie.

Blake Schofield 2:50 What I think is important to understand is the people that you see that have achieved great things that seem to do things that are so courageous, and maybe even think that they don’t face fear. That’s not true. But the difference is they’ve learned how to make friends with fear. They’ve learned how to understand that fear is a natural part of life; it’s our brain reacting to uncertainty, that they’ve also come to learn and understand just as I have, that not everything your brain tells you is true. In fact, a lot of times it tells you lies. It projects on a future that’s scary. It comes up with every scenario that could go wrong. And most of those things will never ever come true. But the thing that I see all of the time is most people don’t know this. And so we believe the lie, we get trapped in the thinking that all these things good could happen. We get trapped in a very black and white perspective that there’s one right answer. And we begin to feel powerless, we begin to feel like if we make this decision is permanent, there are no other decisions we can make. And it’s one decision that will then create this long trajectory for our life of which we’ll never be able to adapt, or change or learn or apply any new lessons. And that’s just not true. It’s not the way life goes. And so I want to share one thing with you today, a tool to leave you with when faced with fear. And I want to thank my amazing success and empowerment coach, Britt, for this wonderful insight that she shared earlier this week with our clients. So great question to ask yourself when faced with fear. What am I more committed to? What I want most or what I am afraid of? I’m going to repeat that again because it’s super powerful. What am I more committed to— what I want most or what I’m afraid of? We have to choose. Because fear and opportunity don’t coexist when our lives are driven by our fears We can never create the opportunities that we want. And so the key is to stop and challenge yourself to understand that what you fear, it’s just something your brain is telling you doesn’t mean it’s true.

Blake Schofield 5:12 You aren’t powerless, you have the ability to learn and adapt. One decision doesn’t have a ripple effect all the way through your life. You have the opportunity every day to learn from that decision, continue to adapt, and continue to move towards the life that you want. But that starts by saying what I want for my life, what I want most is how I’m going to make decisions. I’m going to get up every day, and I’m going to walk closer and closer to the thing that I want. And I’m going to focus all of my energy there because what we know is what we focus on expands, focus on opportunity, focus on what you want, and you will create more of that focus on your fear. And of course, you’ll find more of them. But again, so many of them are an illusion. They’re not actually true. And when faced with really big decisions, Pivotal things in your career, your life, it is the perfect time to seek expert impartial support, help guidance proven processes, to be able to ensure to set yourself up for success. Right, you don’t have to go it alone. So I’m gonna leave you with that one more time. I want to encourage you to take this question this toolkit with you and really start shifting how fear is playing a part in your life. Ask yourself when faced with fear, what am I more committed to what I want most or what I’m afraid of. Thanks again for joining me. I hope you have a fabulous week ahead. Thanks for joining me today.
