Blake Schofield 0:05 Hi, I’m Blake Schofield, founder, and CEO of The Bridge to Fulfillment, mom to three, USA Today top 10 professional coach and former corporate executive who got tired of sacrificing my life for a comfortable paycheck. My mission is to expand women’s perspectives and empower them to achieve greater impact at home and work without sacrifice. This is The Bridge to Fulfillment. Yes, the title of this episode maybe is a bit shocking. And honestly, it’s intended to be why. Because far too often, I see the same mistake being made time and time again. Before I get too into this topic, let me share a little bit about the fact that I am biased. I’m not saying getting a resume writer or updating your resume isn’t important in your job search. Nor am I saying that in every case, it won’t help you make a change. What I am saying is that most of the time, people think that’s the first or the only solution they need. And that is actually what keeps them stuck. Resume updates are important. When you are looking to transition to the same job or one level up in the same path, they generally are a great first step. And if you know how to position yourself, well, possibly the only step you need the problem. If you are unfulfilled in your work, and you want to do something different. Starting with updating your resume is usually a disaster. It’s like putting a BandAid on a cut that requires 10 stitches. Often I get asked if I write resumes. And what I share is that I don’t quote unquote write resumes. But resume positioning and branding and marketing yourself is absolutely part of the work we do at the bridge to fulfillment. But honestly, I digress. Before I get into any of that what I want to do is share with you the decision making criteria, I used to know if a resume update is enough, or the right next steps for you. Or if you’re in need of a more holistic approach. And I share this in the hope to start to give you some context to think about your circumstances and feel more empowered to make better decisions for yourself. First of all, it’s important to understand why you are unfulfilled and how long you’ve been wanting to do something else. The degree of time and unhappiness helps assess a number of things. Number one, how much risk you’re in basically how far you are into the breakdown cycle. Number two, it helps identify the degree of misalignment. And number three, whether you’re going to need a more significant shift or it might be a smaller one, a smaller one might be moving to a different type or size of company or culture versus a larger shift might be an industry or a career path shift. Then I want to understand what your current situation is at work. How close are you actually to the breakdown moment? And how much risk and speed do you need to move into something else? Then how clear Are you on your fulfillment framework, which is the things you need in your current life in order to truly be fulfilled and happy in the long term, and clarity on your secret sauce, transferable skills, here’s what I see, most people have only scratched the surface and have maybe 20% of the clarity on these things that they actually need. And without that clarity, number one, you keep making changes, hoping they’re going to be better only to find more of the same or worse. Or number two, you can’t actually really communicate or align your work with the things you’re best and gifted at. So you end up moving to another role where you’re compromising and spending far too much time doing stuff that doesn’t really align with how you work best or what you love to do. Then we also want to understand what have you already done? If you’ve already been applying to roles, what’s happened? Are you applying to similar roles? Different types of roles if you’re applying to different types of roles? How many different types of roles, industries etc. are you exploring? And then what’s happened during that process? Are you actually getting interviews? And if so, how far are you going? Or are you being ghosted entirely and you’re not getting any traction on what you’re doing? These answers reveal a lot about where the blocks actually are in your process. Because here’s something I know to be true. Updating your resume is not going to help you if you can’t get past the first interview. But so many times I’ve seen women believe that that’s the very thing that they need. One of my mentors says that the magic in music comes from the silence between the notes. Or put another way, the expert is the one who understands the nuances, and that is what enables them to create results that others can’t.

Blake Schofield 4:55 If I look at the hundreds, if not over 1000 conversations with unfulfilled women In the last five years, there’s one pattern I consistently see, we underestimate the risk and the cost of our current circumstances, we don’t see the full picture, we often don’t understand the right next steps or the full scope of what we need in order to reach our goals. And so today, I want to share this with you. If you are unfulfilled and want to do something different, but you aren’t sure what exactly that is, or what steps to take in your job search to find and live that dream role without compromising or taking a step backwards. Know that seeking help and guidance to understand where you are, where you’re headed, and what optimal paths you have to get where you want to go, is the most responsible thing you can do. Assuming that you just need a resume update, and then spending months searching on LinkedIn, applying for roles, not getting traction. Second, guessing and doubting yourself and ultimately losing confidence in yourself. All while you are moving closer and closer to risk of that breakdown moment in your current job is the riskiest thing you can do. Often it can feel scary to reach out and ask for advice or guidance. But this is your personal invitation to do so. I only wish someone could have helped me understand my journey, it would have saved me well over a decade of making changes, moving companies hoping I’d finally be happy long term. On the other side of seeking that help and guidance is peace of mind, clarity, and the ability to take action that you know will move you forward. I’ve shared this with you before but I’m going to share it again. Anxiety equals uncertainty times powerlessness. The only way to reduce your anxiety is to reduce uncertainty or powerlessness. When we sit in jobs we know aren’t right for us. And we can’t see the path forward, we begin to feel trapped or powerless. When we are unsure if the right steps to take or exactly what the right next path is. We feel uncertainty. The longer you stay stuck in that pattern of gathering information, but not getting the knowledge or roadmap you need, the worse your anxiety will get. A proven path, the ability to take the power back in your life. It’s priceless. And just two of the reasons why our clients say that the bridge to fulfillment changed their life. You don’t have to know all the answers to seek guidance. You just have to take the first step and admitting that you aren’t sure exactly how to get where you want to go. And you want help and guidance to figure out how to do so. I hope today’s episode was helpful to you.
