How often have you just wished you had more control over your time, your day, your meetings, your life? Well, for more than 18 years, that was me, I felt at mercy to my boss’s schedule, my projects list, and my team meetings. My life honestly was reactive instead of proactive. And then, I began to learn that life could be a lot easier. That I could create more structure that actually worked for me. That I could ask for what I needed, and adapt to accomplish more, with less effort. So today, I’m going to share one of my productivity hacks with you.

Did you know that there are certain times in the day when your brain is actually wired to do more creative versus more administrative work, that your brain actually works best in 90 minute increments, and that if you constantly change tasks, or topics–Hello to those who would say they’re good at multitasking–then you are actually making your brain quote, unquote, run a marathon? And it takes up to 30 minutes to regain your full focus? And finally, did you know that when you do the wrong type of work during your least productive timeframe, it can actually take you two to three times longer to get that work accomplished? Yes, you heard me correctly, two to three times longer.

So, if you were one of those people who spends their days going from meeting to meeting to meeting, and then finally settling down to do your creative or strategic work, at the end of the day, say between three to 6pm or later, you are actually creating double or triple the work for yourself. And if you wonder why you end up in a pattern of saying, I’ll just finished this one thing, and then be done for the day, only to find that the work drags on, and you end up frustrated and exhausted at the end of the day. That’s why.

So what can you do? Instead, block time first thing in the morning to get that strategic and creative work done. Ideally giving yourself a 60 to a 90 minute window at least two, or ideally three times a week, and start with the most critical and important work first. You’ll find that not only you feel more accomplished, but you actually will be more accomplished. And you’ll get what you need done in far less time so that you can actually have energy at night to pick out what you want to go eat, engage with your family, and still really be able to enjoy your life.
