Hidden Signs Your Job is at Risk

Ep: 181

Are you simply going through the motions at work, not really feeling like it’s where you want to be, but afraid to step into something new?

It’s common to stick to what’s comfortable rather than risk the unknown, but what we often don’t realize is that the longer we stay in jobs and careers that make us unhappy…the MORE risk we put ourselves in.

Layoffs, unemployment, and emotional breakdowns are just a few of the risks of inaction.

The good news? You don’t have to wait until you have a breakdown moment to make a change.

Today on The Bridge to Fulfillment, Blake explains why waiting until you hit the breakdown moment is actually putting your job and your well being at risk.

It’s time to ask yourself: Are you moving with the direction of change, or are you fighting against it?

You’ll recognize the physical and emotional symptoms you might be experiencing that are hinting there’s a misalignment between your job and your values. Blake Schofield 0:05 Hi, I’m Blake Schofield, founder and CEO of the Bridge to Fulfillment, mom to three, USA Today top 10 professional coach, and former corporate executive who got tired of sacrificing my life for a comfortable paycheck. My mission is to expand women’s perspectives and empower them to achieve greater impact at home and work without sacrifice. This is the Bridge to Fulfillment. It can become easy to think that things will just stay as they are. That’s what we call recency bias, where we believe just because things have been a certain way that they will continue that way. But the reality is that things are always changing. The question becomes, are you moving with the direction of change? Or are you fighting it? Often, I’ve talked to women who are clearly at risk of what I call the breakdown moment. That’s when you stay in a career path, or role or a company that is really misaligned for you your natural way of working or your values. And what happens when you hit the breakdown moment is one of two things. You either go into severe emotional or physical breakdown, or you end up being put on a performance plan or laid off even if you had been a top performer before. Now, why does this happen? And why are people I guess so shocked when that happens? It’s because we don’t often realize how bad things are until we’re right in or at or in the middle of that breakdown. So today, I’m going to share with you the signs and symptoms that your job and or your health are at risk in the hopes that it can help you recognize the signs earlier and take action faster, protecting yourself and your family. There are five key workplace signs that you are at risk or at increasing risk. Number one, you’re starting to sense a tension with your boss or an important co worker. Number two, you’ve noticed that you’re no longer being selected for new projects or opportunities. Number three, you have a new boss who just doesn’t seem to see things eye to eye with you. Number four, your company or your area of the company are underperforming. And number five, which is often lead to because of underperformance. There’s a much heavier workload people trying to show that they’re fixing, trying to fix things, and a lot of stress and anxiety sort of happening inside the organization. Now, here’s some personal signs. You’re not sleeping at night with your to do list running through your head, starting to feel or currently feeling trapped in your job, either because everything else you look at seems like more of the same, or would be a big pay cut or step backwards. You’re lacking the motivation or interest in the work. You’re finding yourself having the Sunday scaries having to drag yourself to work every day. Maybe you even think to yourself, who cares what these people are talking about, or, as I used to think, Gosh, everyone’s dedicating so much time to this, but we’re not really saving people’s lives, you may find yourself experiencing increasing frustration or boredom. And then finally, you may be struggling to keep up with the level of work that you used to be able to keep up with or you have a lot of work, which is not really the work you want to do.

Blake Schofield 3:31 You know, often these signs can be there for weeks, months, or in some cases, years, but we ignore them. Or we might actually be trying to do things to quote unquote, save ourselves when our circumstances are not workable long term. So I want to give you an example recently of a client of mine, we were talking about the challenges she was having in her current role with her newer boss. And despite everything that she did, she bent over backwards to try and meet this new bosses, requirements expectations. And it never seemed good enough to the boss. And prior to her new boss. She felt like she was doing an excellent job. She was getting great feedback. She felt like she was well respected in the organization. And then this boss comes in and it feels like no matter what she does, she’s never going to win. And we talked through sort of what her strengths were and her abilities and her secret sauce. And we talked through what her boss valued. And it was in that conversation that she had a wonderful aha moment. The realization that her boss did not value the things that she did, that what her boss wanted from someone in that role was very different than her personal strengths and the results that she drove. And despite the fact that she was meeting all of the things for her role that she should be. It was never going to meet her boss’s expectations because her boss saw things very differently. And in that moment, she was finally able to read realize and separate from what she’d been struggling with, which was this feeling that she wasn’t good enough. And if she just worked hard enough, she could make it work, to actually realizing it’s nothing about her. But what it did do is make it very clear that her circumstances were never going to work long term, because she couldn’t be the person her boss wanted her to be. It was against everything about how she worked, what she valued, what she was uniquely gifted at. And many times when we’re so close to the circumstances, we can’t see, we’re driven by being comfortable or fear of what else might happen if we made a change. We don’t actually realize that change is happening every day. Are we actually working with the change? Or are we resisting it? You know, often we stay where we’re at, because we fear the unknown. But the unknown is just opportunity waiting to be discovered. Change doesn’t have to be a leap or risky. It can be strategic planful intentional, it can be the catalyst to getting everything you want, and maybe even more. Thanks again for joining me. Until next time, have a great week.
